Piles is a fast-paced, strategic card game where players work to create matching sets of clothing cards, racing against each other to empty their hand first. It’s designed for 2-8 players, ages 8 and up, and takes about 10 minutes to play. This detailed guide will walk you through everything you need to know to play Piles.
The goal of Piles is to be the first player to collect six complete sets of matching clothing cards. Players must race to match cards from their hand with those on the table, using speed and memory to outsmart their opponents.
200 Cards: The deck consists of 50 sets of 4 matching cards, for a total of 200 cards. Each set represents a different type of clothing (e.g., socks, shirts, jackets), and each clothing item comes in different colors.
1 Rulebook: Includes the complete rules and setup instructions.
Before starting the game, you need to organize and prepare the deck.
Divide the cards into 50 sets of 4 matching cards. Each set features the same type of clothing but in different colors (for example, four different-colored socks).
The number of sets you’ll use depends on the number of players:
• 2 players: 13 sets
• 3 players: 18 sets
• 4 players: 24 sets
• 5 players: 30 sets
• 6 players: 36 sets
• 7 players: 42 sets
• 8 players: 49 sets
Formula: Multiply the number of players by six, then add one. For example, for a 4-player game, you use 24 sets (4 players x 6 + 1 = 24 sets).
• Shuffle all the cards together.
• Deal six piles of four cards to each player, keeping their piles face-down. Players are allowed to arrange their six piles as they like, but they must keep them face-down and not look at the cards until the game begins.
• The remaining cards are placed face down in a row in the center of the table to form the Draw Pile.
• Flip the top four cards from the Draw Pile and place them face-up in the center. These four cards are the Center Cards.
Note: Players cannot look at the cards in the center at the start of the game, but can rearrange their six piles in front of them.
Piles card game is a simultaneous play game, meaning that all players play at the same time, creating a fast-paced environment where quick thinking, memory, and reaction time are crucial.
Once all players are ready, flip the four Center Cards face-up. Players can then begin to look at the cards in their piles, but must adhere to the following rules while playing.
1. Pick Up a Pile
On your turn, you may only handle one pile of cards at a time. Choose one of your six piles, pick it up, and look at the four cards in it. You can discard one of these cards to the center pile if you wish.
2. Discard and Pick a Card
•Discard one card from your hand to the center pile (in the middle of the table).
•After discarding a card, take one of the four cards from the center and place it into your hand to replace the discarded card.
•There can never be more than four cards in each pile, so after adding a card to your pile, place the pile face-down and pick up a new pile.
3. Matching Sets
As you play, your goal is to create matching sets of four cards of the same clothing type (for example, four matching socks). Once you complete a matching set, place it face-up in front of you to show you have completed that set.
4. Releasing Piles
You can only handle one pile at a time. Once you’re done with the pile you are working with, place it face-down and pick up a different pile to repeat the process.
5. No Turns, No Waiting
There are no turns in Piles. Everyone plays simultaneously, quickly discarding and drawing cards from the center. As more cards are collected and players get closer to completing their piles, the game picks up speed.
6. Stealing Cards
•Any of the four cards in the center pile are available for any player to take, meaning they can grab cards from other players’ piles if they are quick enough.
•Players must make fast decisions about what cards to discard and what cards to take, constantly reacting to what other players are doing.
• Picking and Discarding: Players take turns picking up their piles, discarding a card from it to the center, and then taking a new card from the center.
• Completing Sets: Once a player completes a set of four matching cards, they place the set face-up in front of them.
• Simultaneous Action: All players are trying to complete sets at the same time, and the game’s pace becomes faster as the piles reduce in size.
The game ends when one player has successfully completed all six of their piles and shouts out “Piles!” to signal the end of the game.
1. Verify the Piles
The player must immediately show that each of their six piles consists of four matching cards. If the player has made an error and doesn’t have six complete sets, gameplay continues, and no one wins yet.
2. If Correct
If the player has completed all six piles correctly, they win the game.
• Speed is Key: Since all players play simultaneously, it’s important to be quick when deciding which cards to pick up and discard.
• Memory and Focus: Keep track of what cards are in the center pile and in your piles to avoid unnecessary discards and maximize the chance of completing sets faster.
• Don’t Get Distracted: While it’s tempting to watch what others are doing, focus on your piles and act fast. Remember, speed wins the game!
• Special Action Cards: You can introduce special cards to add complexity and variety to the game. Some action cards could include:
• Skip: Skip the next player’s turn.
• Reverse: Reverse the direction of play.
• Draw 2: Force the next player to draw two extra cards.
• House Rules: Players can agree to house rules that add personal flair, such as limiting the number of sets to complete, or changing how the piles are arranged.
